Zen meditation, also known as Zazen, is known to have several different methods and schools of thought, but it all boils down to the study of oneself. The great Master Dogen said, “To study the Buddha Way is to study the self, to study the self is to forget the self, and to forget the self is to be enlightened by the ten thousand things.” This is the essence of Zen meditation, to study yourself in order to become one with all else. If you are looking for more spirituality in your life, then you might consider Zen meditation, the heart of the Zen Buddhist practice. Zen meditation can be practiced in a variety of ways. The first is to simply practice on your own, in the quiet of your own home, whenever you can find the time. The nice thing about Buddhism-based spirituality is that it is all about what is best for you. Zen meditation can be a rock in your life, without adding the extra pressure of attending classes and groups. First, you should choose a location and position that is most comfortable for you. Second, focus on your breathing, keeping your mouth closed and taking deep belly breaths. Third, by focusing on counting your breaths from one to ten and back again, you clear your mind and you will become open to new ideas and possibilities that can connect you with the universe. Zen meditation can be quite basic, and it can also be highly advanced. If you are looking for an opportunity to take your Zazen to the next level, then you should consider a Zen meditation getaway. These mini meditation vacations let you go to a beautiful new place you’ve never seen before, such as India or a mountain retreat in the United States, and will offer seminars on meditation taught by masters. These vacations are a great way to become a Zen meditation master, and tap into your hidden spiritual potential. Once you have mastered the art of Zen meditation, you might be interested in sharing the practice with others. You can do this in a variety of ways. One way is to start a meditation group in your home, meeting once a week or more often as schedules allow, and leading the group in thoughtful meditation. Another way is to open a meditation center in your area, or to rent space at a local yoga studio. This is a great way to use what you have learned to teach others and benefit yourself at the same time. Zen meditation can open up a world of possibilities to you if you will let it.
