Yoga for Seniors 3

* Paranayama (breathing technique): This breathing technique will help your focus. Often times allowing you to calm your mind from daily stress, and slow your breathing. This will help you to prepare for the calm movement of yoga poses to come. You may also utilize any props that you wish for this technique to make yourself more comfortable. However it isn’t a must-have.

* Reclining big-toe pose: This pose will help you to increase your hamstring flexibility. Often times aiding in joint pain and mobility (along with back decompression). Again you should utilize yoga props as per your yoga teacher’s instructions. Often times they will suggest using a yoga strap. Which can also be purchased in the store-section of this website.

* Seated hip internal and external rotation: This sequence of poses are especially wonderful for senior yoga practitioners. It will help your hips in gaining a full-range of motion. However you should always remember to speak with your doctor prior to doing this move if you have hip problems.

* Quadruped cat and cow pose(s): these poses will help to take your spine through tall walks of motion. It will allow you to provide your body with the needed support it needs to help in making you healthy. You should always utilize a shoulder girdle during these poses. It will help you to maintain balance and stabilize your form while practicing them.

* Mountain pose: one of the most popular poses in all yoga classes. It will help to reinforce proper posture while you are standing. It will also help to indicate any imbalances that you might have to your teacher. It is common for teachers to utilize not only your yoga mat, but a wall as well to teach this movement.

* Downward-facing dog pose: This pose will help to strengthen your upper body. It also aids in stretching your back, and relieving any pain that you might be feeling. You may wish to use a chair or table to help achieve this pose.

* Warrior pose (1): This pose will help you to strengthen your back, and extend your legs. It will also help to challenge your own personal sense of balance. You may wish to add in a shoulder squeeze for the added workout.

* Bridge pose: This yoga pose is perfect for senior practitioners! It will help to open your scapulas (shoulder blades) and to strengthen your legs. You may wish to use a yoga strap for added support as well.
