Yoga For Mental Clarity

Yoga for Mental Clarity
By Shelley Sidle

Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, with many variations and branches of focus. It originated in India and is based on three main components: exercise, meditation and breathing. Regular training and study of these three practices results in increased mental clarity, a strong and balanced body, and connection of body, mind, and spirit.

Steps six and seven of the eight steps of Classical Yoga are directly related to mental clarity: 6) dharana, concentration, being able to hold the mind on one object for a specified time; 7) dhyana, meditation, the ability to focus on one thing (or nothing) indefinitely. Learning to focus upon your breathing as you sit in a meditative posture, or as you are moving from one pose (or asana) to another is at once relaxing and clarifying to the mind. As you learn to be attentive to your breathing, you will also learn to effectively focus and clear your mind. You will find that the persistent voice or narrative that goes through your mind (also called “monkey mind”) becomes much quieter, and you are more easily able to focus your thoughts and feelings on the moment, rather than fretting about what you are going to be doing later, or what you did earlier.

Practicing some basic poses, like the “Sun Salutation” series, followed by lying in corpse pose while breathing and meditating for a few minutes is a great way to start and end your day, clearing your mind of worries, stress and unnecessary thoughts. 30 to 40 minutes a day has been shown in studies to be effective in healing your body and mind, and is also generally the recommended amount of time for any practice of meditation. You will feel the difference with your first day of yoga, and with daily practice your mind will be clear and your body will be strong, yet relaxed and balanced.
