Yoga for Epilepsy

Epilepsy (otherwise known as Seizure disorder) is a disease that is one of the oldest recorded diseases throughout human kind. However, epilepsy is simply a word that is used to describe many different illnesses, that have one common symptom with one another; seizure. If you or a family member have been diagnosed with epilepsy, you know how disruptive it can be to your daily life. Regardless of how long you have been diagnosed with epilepsy, chances are you have discussed the positive role yoga plays with the treatment of epilepsy.

It has been proven that yoga plays a vital role in the treatment of epilepsy. While it is an ancient tradition, it is still a modern approach to treating any seizure related illness. It has been shown that the ancient Indian texts (Vedas) describe four known types of epilepsy. Along with nine disorders that have been known to cause seizures in children and adults. They also show the treatment of yoga for epilepsy in depth; of which has produced many great effects on a person’s life with seizure disorder.

During a seizure he or she will catch and hold their breath. This of course can cause changes in their metabolism, blood flow, as well as their oxygen levels. However, the practice of paranayama (a controlled breathing technique found in yoga) has been found to help restore normal respiration. Paranayama can also help to help reduce the chances that you might have of slipping into a seizure state or stop them mid-stream before they become too debilitating.

Asanas can also help to aid in restoring balance to your body. It has been proven to help increase physical stamina, and to help calm your nervous system. They have been used both alone to treat epilepsy as well as in a combination of different yoga techniques. Even alone they have been shown to decrease your chances of having a seizure. Which as you might know, is one of the best things you can ever think to receive from any form of exercise!

In conjunction with Asanas and Paranayama. You have the tradition of Dhyana (more commonly known as meditation). As you might have already been told by your doctor, stress can trigger seizure activity. Through the use of Dhyana, you will be able to relax and sooth your mind; all while healing your body. It also helps to improve blood flow to your brain, and will help to decrease the production of stress hormones.
