Yoga for Depression

When it comes to yoga for depression, you might find yourself a sceptic. However, there are many medical professionals who prescribe yoga as an aid in depression treatment. While it wouldn’t replace medical care; when used in conjunction with medications yoga can help to reduce the symptoms of many different types of depression.

But how does yoga work for depression exactly? Well it is really quite simple. More-so than you might think. Through the increased awareness, breathing, and concentration of yoga. You are able to control your moods better. The asana’s that are taught to yoga students can help to calm the mind. Causing you to become more attuned to your body and body’s reactions.

The awareness of your body can help you to reap both physical and emotional benefits. While practicing yoga you will move your body into different asana’s (postures), and will pay attention to each limb and muscle. Allowing you to become more connected with how your body works. It will help you to attune to your body’s inner-most workings. Often times creating a one-on-one experience that so many people are lacking when suffering with depression.

Now that we have looked at the awareness of your body that yoga will provide. You will now learn a little more about the breathing techniques. While it might sound simple, many of us neglect our breathing. Often times taking fast shallow breaths, that can have our bodies wanting for more. Yoga forces us to breath correctly! Enabling our body to gain the oxygen that it needs to help us to maintain our body. It is also thought that proper breathing can help to place us in a meditation state of mind, and thus help depression through yoga.

Lastly you have the concentration portion of yoga. This part of yoga is important to create a solid basis of yourself. It will allow you to focus your attention on something other than poor emotions. Often times being the last stop to helping you manage your depression with yoga. Remember, as with any other workout routine or possible treatment. You should always talk with your doctor, when adding yoga into your depression treatment.
