Yoga Breathing Techniques 1

If you have been practicing yoga for any amount of time, you now know exactly how important breathing techniques are. However, if you haven’t yet started the yoga lifestyle; you will soon find out exactly what the benefits and techniques of breathing are. In the yoga life breathing techniques are called Paranayama. Which is considered to be the science of controlling your breathing. With a series of exercises meant to meet the body’s needs; it is essential in all walks of life.

Ideally Paranayama is the practice of opening one’s inner life force. Not just breathing as many people speculate. It teaches you to prepare for the meditation process. Throughout our lives we breath, though not many of us actually take advantage of our breathing. When we breath we inhale oxygen into our bodies. Allowing it to flow into our body systems as a form of energy to super-charge each part of the body. However when we exhale, we remove carbon dioxide from our bodies as well as other toxic wastes. It is thought that through the practice of Paranayama breathing, that the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide is attained thoroughly. Allowing us to absorb prana through our breathing control. Which is speculated to link our body, mind, and spirit.

However if life is full of stress, we tend to ignore our breathing. Often times not giving it a second glance. Causing us to take fast and shallow breaths, that can lead to a usage of only a portion of our lungs. Thus leading to many different complications due to our shallow breathing. Some such problems that many people suffer due to their breathing is sleep disorders, heart disease, and fatigue. In effect it is a sort of oxygen starvation in our bodies. By practicing paranayama we can re-energize our bodies, and help to prevent these life-altering diseases.

When you begin learning about paranayama, you will be taught the four basic stages of breathing techniques. First starting with Arambha. Which is the commencement stage of breathing. This is when the person’s interest in paranayama is first awakened, and it becomes a way of life. The second stage is Ghata. During this stage the three sariras will merge to envelop one’s soul. The three sariras (gross, casual, subtle) will all be taught to you during yoga class.

Next you will find the stage of Parichay. This is when the practitioner will begin to experience the knowledge of paranyama. The fourth and last stage is Nispatti. Of where the practitioner can go beyond his or her physical body. Allowing them to connect body, mind, and soul.
