Yoga and Spirituality
Many people use yoga only as a means of exercise and physical activity. However, yoga is a spiritual path that can instill meaning to your life, bringing inner peace and joy. Yoga frees the body's tension and releases the emotional and mental turbulence many people store. By slowly purging the body of extra stress and life's burdens, you become a new person.
The ancient practice of yoga originated in India between 1,000 and 5,000 BC in the Indus Valley. It is an ancient spiritual and philosophical tradition, linking the material world and consciousness with the true self. Yoga was first practiced by the Indus to promote spiritual growth. Even the word "yoga" means "union with God."
The spiritual aspects of yoga are designed to fuse the finite with the infinite. Many of the ancient yogis believed that "God" is everything and everywhere, a belief sometimes referred to as "pantheism." By practicing yoga, it's possible to combine this pantheistic element with your own self and ultimately become aware of your union with God and the universe. In fact, since meditation is such a large part of yoga practice, it is hard to truly experience the benefits of yoga without introducing a spiritual element to the physical movements.
Spirituality is at the very heart of yoga, promoting self-awareness, self-discovery, and personal realization. From the perspective of yogis, the spiritual elements of life are understood by cultivating awareness, and bringing your attentiveness into the deep, subtle dimensions. Yoga intensifies, purifies, and redirects your inner forces to promote spiritual awakening and healing, bringing the universal consciousness into the limited consciousness. Yoga is not a religion-people of all faiths practice yoga for the life-enrichment and personal awareness that come with it. Yoga is a means to realize your spiritual oneness.
