Iyengar yoga, a beloved style of yoga that was created by one B.K.S Iyengar. It is known for the use of props throughout the routine. Making it a wonderful means of getting in touch with your inner self, without having to worry about holding a challenging posture without support. Some of the props that are frequently used in Iyengar yoga are belts, blocks, chairs, and walls. All of which are used to aid in performing asanas (or postures) throughout your class.
While other styles of modern yoga may not focus around the religious aspects of yoga. Iyengar yoga is known to have a steadfast belief in Dharana and other common yoga beliefs. It’s practice focusing on the traditional eight limbs of yoga, which can be found with roots of Patanjali’s yoga structures. Of which is meant to help build stamina, strength, flexibility, as well as overall balance. Through the practice fo concentration (or Dharana) along with meditation (or Dhyana) you will find that you will connect with your innermost self, through the practice of Iyengar yoga.
While many practitioners might think of Iyengar yoga as it’s own style. It is known as yet another form of the massive Hatha yoga base. Of which is known to focus greatly on the overall alignment of your physical body and the mind (not to mention the spirit). However the last is to be simply put, optional for many. Simply because many different people, in many different belief systems choose to practice Iyengar yoga. That isn’t to say that the spiritual and religious aspects of this style of yoga aren’t worth learning, as they have been proven to uplift the spirit.
Through the practice of asanas (or poses) you will begin to find this alignment of your body easily achieved. It is thought that through these controlled movements, you can help to relieve your body of life’s stresses. Of which is something that we can all benefit greatly from in this fast paced means of living. Allowing us to promote healing in our own lives, and de-stressing after our weekly hustle and bustle of the modern life.
