Savasana is the first basic yoga pose to learn. It will help teach you how to relax your entire body with full complete breaths. Four way breathing is filling both lungs and both sides of your diaphragm (four sections) completely. When you inhale imagine the air coursing through your whole body head to toe, relaxing further into meditation as the air leave every muscle. Picture the oxygen as a white light cleansing your entire body, bit by bit. When you exhale image the air discolored, like toxins exiting your body leaving you full of light and feeling relaxed.

The word yoga comes from the Sanskirt work yuj. Yuj is often interpreted to mean union or a method of practice. Male yoga practitioners are called yogi and female practitioners are called yogini.

Today, yoga is an extremely popular activity. Although yoga was once practiced mainly in the East, there are now many Western practitioners. People are attracted to yoga for its health benefits, especially its capacity to create a relaxed mind and body.

Asana yoga is the most widely practiced form of yoga in the west.. Asana yoga is designed to cultivate the mind and body in a manner that is conducive to long periods of meditation. Physical strength and stamina are key components of asana yoga.

Hatha yoga is the term used to mean a set of physical exercises. The exercises of hatha yoga are meant to align skin, muscles and bones. In addition, hatha seeks to open the channels of the body so that energy can flow freely.

Yoga pants, mats, props and other equipment

It is believed that an Indian Sage named Patanjali created one of the first comprehensive guides on yogi. The book, called Yoga Sutra, was created approximately 2,000 years ago. This collection still serves as the basis for most forms of yoga practiced today.

The Yoga Sutra outlined the eight limbs of yoga as follows: the yamas (restraints), niyamas (observances), asana (postures), pranayama (breathing), pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), dharana (concentration), dhyani (meditation), and samadhi (absorption).

Finding the right yoga mat

Any mat that is used for yoga should be non-slip. However, not all manufacturers take this added precaution when producing their yoga mat. Read the labels on the box or any details online. If they offer little or no information on being non-slip, you might opt to go to the next box before making your decision. Most online yoga retailers will list non-slip in their descriptions of the yoga mat. Making it easier for you to determine the best mat for your yoga needs.
